'Sad and senseless': 3-year-old girl, father die after shooting in Kentucky neighborhood

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — There aren't enough words to describe 3-year-old Trinity Randolph.

Trinity is one of two dead after police responded Friday to a shooting in Louisville's Jacobs neighborhood.

"Beautiful, intelligent, joyous. Very articulate, very outgoing," said her grandmother, Cheryl Howlett, Trinity's great-grandmother.

She was the light that shined brightest to her family, now her smile will only be a memory.

"I got the call that my grandchild wasn't here anymore. It's just sad and senseless," said Tyronn Howlett, Trinity's grandfather.

According to Louisville police, crews responded just after 1 p.m. to a shooting in the area of Kahlert Avenue and West Southern Heights, just off Taylor Boulevard.

When they arrived, officials found a man in his 20s fatally shot. A child -- later identified as Trinity -- was taken by LMPD to Kosair Children's Hospital, but ultimately died from their injuries.

"I just don't know what else to do, it has to stop. It has to stop," said Cheryl.

Detectives spent hours knocking on doors, speaking with neighbors, trying to piece together who would do this and why.

After this being the 96th and 97th homicide in Louisville this year, one community activist said enough is enough – it's time to put an end to gun violence.

"At one time, the community was playing a more active participation with the police. It was more of a partnership," said Bishop Dennis V. Lyons.

Lyons said because of the growing frustration from the community with LMPD over the Breonna Taylor investigation and ongoing protests, people aren't as willing to speak up.

"The community is not being as proactive as we used to be, so it seems like there's a free-for-all," Lyons told WLKY.

And in this case, Trinity Randolph's family said it only takes one person to help get justice for the father and the daughter who everyone loved.

"Children don't have anything to do with it. They're innocent and they should never be in whatever an adult has going on, in between that," said her grandfather.

“This is the first time that our family has been touched by any kind of violence. I didn't think we would ever see a day like this, to ever get a phone call like that,” said Tandra Brooks.
