Teen killed in Waukegan’s 3rd deadly shooting in a week

A Waukegan teenager became the third homicide shooting victim within a week Friday night after a police officer and residents in the 700 block of North Green Bay Road heard gunfire, according to a press release from the Waukegan Police Department.

The 15-year-old boy was found by a Waukegan police officer around 9:45 p.m. Friday shortly after the officer heard a scream and a gunshot while in a commercial parking lot in the 700 block of North Green Bay Road, police Commander Joe Florip said in a telephone interview Sunday.

The teen died at the scene, police said. About the time the officer heard the shot, police began receiving calls informing the department gunshots were heard in the same area.

Currently under inquiry by the department’s Criminal Investigation Unit, police said in the release this is an active homicide investigation. The motive is unknown and no one is in custody.

Witnesses in the area of the crime scene told police a dark colored SUV left the area at a high rate of speed after the shots were fired, according to the release. It is unknown if the vehicle is involved. Florip said police have a photo of the vehicle of interest from surveillance video.

“It’s tragic,” Florip said. “Any time a young life is lost like this, it’s very tragic.”

Within the last week, Annie Nunnally, 63, of North Chicago, was fatally shot Aug. 22 as she tried to break up a fight during a party in the 600 block of McAllister Avenue in Waukegan.

Damar McDonald, 32, of Waukegan is being sought on a first degree murder warrant in connection with the Nunnally shooting. Achley Cruz-Oquendo, 32, of Waukegan, was arrested Tuesday on charges of obstruction of justice in the same case.
