Dearborn Heights police are investigating a shooting Saturday afternoon that left the suspect and his mother and sister dead at an apartment complex in Dearborn Heights.

The shooting occurred around 3 p.m. at Cherry Hill Village Apartments near Cherry Hill and Inkster roads. State Police reported  that a preliminary investigation showed one suspect shot and killed two people.

State Police said the suspect then fired at officers who arrived on the scene and was killed after police returned fire.   Officials say no other injuries were reported and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

No identities have been released. Family members at the scene confirmed the two victims were the suspect's mother and sister.

Patches McCullough, a neighbor, said he saw the suspect with an AK-47 on the back balcony while leaving his apartment with his two daughters, ages 5 and 7.

McCullough, who said he has previously helped the suspect's family with errands, saw the suspect's mother struggling to restrain the 6-foot-5 man in his mid-30s.

The suspect struggled with mental health issues, said McCullough, who added that he has had to intervene to calm him on multiple occasions in the three years he has lived at the apartment complex.

"It was like something out of a movie, you don't see nothing like that in Dearborn Heights," McCullough, 30, said. "I'm from the east side. I was more worried about my kids, they're everything to me."

Neighbors said they saw the suspect earlier in the day wandering the neighborhood, appearing to be speaking to himself. McCullough said the suspect has never posed a threat to neighbors or to his mother and sister — with whom he lived.

Officers "gave him every chance to put the gun down," and tried to calm the suspect, but the suspect began firing shots at them, McCullough said. Officers fired multiple warnings shots before directly hitting the suspect, he said.

"They didn't have a choice," McCullough said.

Nishit Chandra, 28, said the neighborhood houses many families and is typically quiet in the four months he's lived there.

"It was very scary for me and my family," he said while standing on the grass perimeter of the police scene with family members.

Officers from Dearborn Heights, Dearborn, Inkster and the State Police were at the scene. Police said there is currently no threat but officers will remain in the area throughout the evening.
