Prosecutors have filed charges against the last person to see 17-year-old Paige Johnson alive.

COVINGTON, Ky. — Nearly 10 years after her mysterious disappearance, prosecutors have filed charges against the last person to see 17-year-old Paige Johnson alive.

Jacob Bumpass was indicted on charges of abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence in connection to Johnson’s disappearance and death.

Johnson, a young mother, was 17 years old when she vanished in Covington on Sept. 23, 2010.

The teen attended a party with friends that night, including Bumpass, who was 22 at the time.

Bumpass claimed he dropped Johnson off at a home near the intersection of 15th Street and Scott Boulevard in Covington around 1 a.m. -- the last time anyone reported seeing Johnson alive.

For 10 years, family and friends were left without answers, although they all had their suspicions, many questioning Bumpass's story.

"If there's a hell, this is what I would imagine it would be," Donna Johnson, Paige's mother, said in the years after her daughter's death. "Every day, it's like, will somebody come forth today? Will somebody tell? Nobody ever does."

It wasn't until March 25, 2020, that Johnson's remains were found.

Hunters in Clermont County, Ohio, told investigators they found what appeared to be a burnt human skull in the woods near State Route 276 and eastbound State Route 32. Additional human remains were found nearby -- remains that were positively identified as Johnson's.

Bumpass had been questioned numerous times in connection to Johnson's disappearance and death, although he was never named a suspect.

Authorities did note several inconsistencies with Bumpass's story. Notably, investigators say that Bumpass claimed he dropped Johnson off in Covington, but his cell phone pinged on a tower near East Fork Lake.

Deputies said the same tower is 1.5 miles from the scene where Paige’s body was discovered.

In the years since her disappearance, Bumpass has been in and out of jail for unrelated charges, mostly for parole violations for separate incidents.
