1-Year-Old Boy Shot To Death In Stroller Outside Brooklyn Playground *NewYork

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A 1-year-old boy was shot to death overnight near a playground in Brooklyn.

Police said the child was sitting in a stroller with a group of people having a barbecue when gunfire erupted.

The boy was identified as 1-year-old Davell Gardner Jr.

Mayor Bill de Blasio held a moment of silence during Monday’s press briefing and said he was “heartbroken” over the child’s death.

“We’ve got to take resolve out of every situation like this. We can never give up,” he said. “We can never give up on our children, we can never give up on our families, we can never give up on our neighborhoods — no matter how tough it seems.”

“It means the whole community has to be involved,” he added. “It’s never just about police. It has to be community and police together.”

The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. Sunday outside Raymond Bush Playground on Madison Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Sources tell CBS2 police believe two men ambushed the victims and fired more than 20 rounds.

Police said the 1-year-old was shot in the stomach and died at the hospital.

Three adults were also wounded, but were expected to survive.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea visited the scene and offered his condolences to the family, CBS2’s John Dias reported.

Advocates also showed up at the scene, people who’ve dealt with the loss of young loved ones, mothers who, themselves, know what it’s like to go through something like this, CBS2’s Kevin Rincon reported.

“You ain’t not gangsta. You a punk. You a punk, with a gun. You think is going to make you a man, but it ain’t,” resident Erica Ford said.

“This whole block should be out here, because everyone knows who’s doing what. They need to knock on those doors and say, listen, if you don’t do something about it, we are,” said Aaron Thomas of St. Albans, Queens.

The family of the 1-year-old lives in a shelter on Chester Street in Bed-Stuy. Throughout the day they sat out in front, grieving, hurt, and still trying to process what happened. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family.

“I can’t imagine what they’re going through. It’s really awful,” resident Sarah Duffy said.

Others said they are just sick and tired of the senseless violence.

“Crime is up. People [are] shooting each other and killing each other. Got a lot of hatred going on,” said William Berry. “We’ve got to learn to get together.”

“Please put these guns down. We don’t need no more of this,” Tommy Holiday said. “When does this stop? Friday, my nephew was killed in East New York. Today, a 1-year-old baby. When does this stop? This is a shame, this is a 1-year-old baby seen no life yet.”
