Former neighbor taken into custody after fatal shooting in Braintree

A woman was fatally shot Wednesday at the entrance to her Braintree home, officials said.

Police were dispatched to the home at 64 Howie Road at 11:44 a.m. in response to numerous reports of gunshots, according to Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey.

Once there, Morrissey said officers encountered Robert Bonang near the front entranceway. He was taken into custody.

Morrissey said Bonang was formerly a resident of the neighborhood.

A resident of the home, identified as Laurie Melchionda, was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the entranceway. She was pronounced dead at South Shore Hospital.

"It is believed that this is a targeted event, it's not a random act and this is not something that the neighbors should have to worry about," Morrissey said.
