27-year-old man killed in shooting at Jefferson Square, suspect in custody



Officials have identified the man killed in shooting in Jefferson Square Saturday night.

According to Louisville Metro Police Department, officers were sent to the 600 block of West Jefferson Street on a report of shooting around 9 p.m. Saturday. When officers arrived, they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.


The coroner identified the man killed as Tyler Gerth, 27. Police say the suspected shooter at Jefferson Square Park is in police custody at the hospital. The shooter had been participating in the protests and was previously told to leave by fellow protesters and had been arrested. Officials say they are not naming the suspect in the shooting at this time. He is currently awaiting charges. Chief Amy Hess says there is now an ordinance in place ordinance that prohibits camping and temporary shelters in Jefferson Square Park. Jefferson Square Park has become a central location for protests in the past month. Earlier in the day, there was hundreds in the area and marching around downtown. Until the shooting, LMPD said protests had been peaceful on Saturday.
