Coronavirus Updates: Donald Trump Doesn’t Have To Wear A Face Mask, Wuhan Sees New Coronavirus Cases And Numbers Of COVID-19 Drop In New York

New cases of #coronavirus were found in Wuhan, China, beaches in Los Angeles may possibly reopen this week, and White House officials will be required to wear face masks – except for Donald Trump.

It’s been over a month since the country went into total shutdown following the outbreak of COVID-19. So far, the U.S. death toll has crossed 80,000 as of Sunday. There are currently 4,238,203 cases, 286,079 deaths worldwide, and 1,520,199 people who have recovered from the disease. NBC News reports that Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced Britain would start to pull back on its lockdown measures. However, in Wuhan, the original epicenter of the coronavirus, more cases are starting to emerge.

The first case for the city comes 35 days after lockdown restrictions were eased. NPR reports there are now at least six new COVID-19 cases. “An 89-year-old Wuhan man tested positive for COVID-19 this week,” said NPR’s Emily Feng. She also mentioned that the man’s wife and several others who lived in the same community also contracted the disease. They had no physical symptoms of the virus. “The rise of such hard-to-detect asymptomatic cases has alarmed public health authorities in China, who have ramped up contact tracing and testing efforts,” Feng said. Renewed outbreaks are also happening in South Korea and Germany following governments’ rolling back of social distancing guidelines.

While numbers are starting to rise in China, numbers are falling in the U.S. coronavirus epicenter, New York. According to CNN, Coronavirus infection and hospitalization rates in the city are back to what they were two months prior. The outlet reports that 488 coronavirus patients were taken to hospitals, a number that is close to what it was on March 19, “before we went into the abyss of the COVID virus,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday. “In many ways, we’re on the other side of the mountain.” The governor added that parts of New York will start to reopen on Friday, which will mostly be rural areas in upstate New York.

So what’s happening in the White House? Well, apparently, Trump won’t be ordered to wear a face mask. A new policy has been enforced upon the Trump administration, which will require staff and employees to wear face coverings when inside the West Wing. “As an additional layer of protection, we are requiring everyone who enters the West Wing to wear a mask or face covering,” read the memo. However, the order will not include Trump or Pence despite Pence’s aide being one of two people who recently contracted the virus.

In the meantime, expect to see your favorite award shows and festivals screened online. Comic-Con, the largest comic festival has been canceled, but it will host a “Comic-Con at Home” event around July 23 to July 26. The National Association of Television Arts & Sciences , which produces the Daytime Emmys, Sports Emmy, and the News & Documentary Emmys, will host the ceremonies virtually. Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards will also go live on computer screens, on May 2.

If you’re looking for some fun in the sun, Los Angeles may reopen its beaches by Wednesday. Los Angeles County will also be reopening florists, bookstores clothing stores and music shops for pickup orders only.
