Netflix Acquires Rights To Nipsey Hussle Documentary; Ava Duvernay Chosen By Nipsey’s Estate To Direct The Film

Netflix has acquired the rights to the Nipsey Hussle documentary in an eight-figure deal, Deadline reported on Tuesday.

The estate of Nipsey Hussle chose Ava Duvernay to direct the doc in a collaborative effort between DuVernay’s ARRAY company and Nipsey’s Marathon Films following her stunning work with awarding winning mini-series, “When They See Us.”

The deal was announced nearly a year after Nipsey’s brazen murder last March outside of his Marathon Clothing Store in Los Angeles. 29-year-old Eric Holder was apprehended months later for the killing. He is currently awaiting trial.

Nip has received much posthumously recognition, winning a Grammy this year for Best Rap Performance on “Racks In The Middle ” featuring mentee Roddy Ricch. During the ceremony, he was honored with a touching tribute where Meek Mill and Roddy Ricch debuted a new tribute song, “Letter to Nipsey,” while on stage.

Duvernay’s involvement with the doc is her latest in a string of projects, including the upcoming “Cherish the Day” for OWN Network.
