TV Personality and Trainer Jillian Michaels Under Fire For Distasteful Comments About Lizzo

The last few months have seen the Internet troll the breakout star, Lizzo, for her weight and overwhelming confidence.

While many have been in support of Lizzo and her body positivity movement, there have also been some who disagree with her lifestyle and acts, such as going to an NBA game with her butt out or posting nude photographs to her social media accounts.

In fact, many feel Lizzo should take her health more serious, including professional trainer and television personality Jillian Michaels (The Biggest Loser).

After a visit on Buzzfeed News’ AM2DM morning show,  Michaels insisted that we shouldn’t be celebrating Lizzo’s body.

“Why are we celebrating her body?” Michaels questioned in reference to a discussion being held about Lizzo. “Why aren’t we celebrating her music? Cause it isn’t going to be awesome if she gets diabetes. I love her music. My kid loves her music. But, there’s never a moment where I’m like, ‘And I’m so glad that she’s overweight.”

Michaels’ comments went viral, and almost immediately prompted widespread backlash.

After being scrutinized for her comments, Michaels took to Twitter to post a statement writing, “As I’ve stated repeatedly, we are all beautiful, worthy, and equally deserving. I also feel strongly that we love ourselves enough to acknowledge there are serious health consequences that come with obesity – heart disease, diabetes, cancer, to name only a few. I would never wish these for ANYONE, and I would hope we prioritize our health because we LOVE ourselves and our bodies.”

Many who bashed Michaels due to her comments have labeled her as fat-phobic and claims she is fat-shaming Lizzo.

However, some insist that since her story of overcoming obesity at a young age is well known to the public, that Michaels’ comments aren’t surprising as she’s made a career off fat-shaming different individuals as her spitefulness might be rooted in self-hate, according to Complex.

Michaels’ comments come just two days after Lizzo announced her departure from Twitter, hinting that the trolls got to her.

“Yeah, I can’t do this Twitter shit no more.. too many trolls… ✌🏾 I’ll be back when I feel like it,” the eight-time Grammy nominee wrote.
