Louisiana Plane Crash Leaves Five Dead, Including LSU’S Offensive Coordinator’s Daughter-In-Law

An aircraft that departed from Lafayette Regional Airport crashed Saturday morning leaving five people dead and one survivor.                                                       

According to the Lafayette Police, the plane crashed at at 9:22 am near a U.S. Post Office and a Walmart, which is four miles from the airport.

Eyewitnesses described to KLFY hearing sounds “like a semi-truck” prior to the crash. Resident Kevin Jackson said, “I was right outside before the crash. When I noticed the plane,  it low and smoking like hell. I went inside and all you heard was this massive explosion.”

Louisiana Governor, John Bell Edwards expressed his condolences via Twitter, describing the news as heartbreaking.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    

The plane was set to land at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, an airport near Atlanta, Georgia, where Louisiana State University played the Oklahoma Sooners in the Peach Bowl.

CNN reported that one of the victims is Carley Ann McCord, 30, a Louisiana based sports reporter and daughter-in-law to Louisiana State University Offensive Coordinator, Steve Ensminger.

Head Coach, Ed Orgeron told ESPN, “Steve and his wife and his family are very distraught.”

The New Orleans Saints described McCord as an “in-game” host for Saints and NBA Pelicans games.

Fire officials identified the other four victims to CNN: Ian E. Biggs (pilot), 51,

Robert Vaughn Crisp II, 59, Gretchen D. Vincent, 51, and Michael Walker Vincent, 15.

The one survivor, who is in critical condition has been identified as Stephen Wade Berzas, 37.

NBC reported, five other civilians were injured on the ground. Many bystanders have been treated for smoke inhalation.

The Federal Aviation and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed the aircraft was a  Piper PA-31 registered to Cheyenne Partners LLC, located in Louisiana.                                                                                                                   

Details on what caused the crash have yet to be reported.
