University of Louisville basketball coach Chris Mack has talked about potentially making one of the freshmen a redshirt this season.
On Monday, Mack said the staff was still working through some things but just three hours before the season-opening game against Miami the Cardinals have announced his decision.
Freshman forward Jae’Lyn Withers will redshirt this season for the Cardinals.
“I’m all for it,” Withers said about the decision in a release. “My potential is through the roof and I want to get to that untapped potential and hopefully go above it.  I’ll still be in the wars with our guys as we advance through this season.”
Mack had talked since he started recruiting Quinn Slazinski about making him a redshirt, but during the ACC Operation Basketball in mid-October he said Slazinski had “been very impressive.” But Mack said then that Withers could be a candidate so he could “physically get bigger and stronger.”
“Jae’Lyn is a very talented young man who our coaching staff feels has a very bright future,” Mack said in a release. “We will push him this year to get stronger and experienced as a college player through intense practices, individual skill and sessions in our weight room.
“Jae’Lyn has a chance to be a dynamite player for us down the line. We want to ensure that development takes place by redshirting Jae’Lyn for the coming season. His time is coming.”  Withers was the winner of the slam dunk competition at Louisville Live in September.
A 6-foot-9 native of Charlotte, N.C., Withers averaged 19.8 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.2 blocked shots as a senior last season in helping Cleveland Heights (Ohio) High School to a 14-11 record while reaching the district semifinals. He only played one season in Cleveland.
As a junior in 2017-18, Withers averaged 20 points, 10.1 rebounds and shot 43 percent from three-point range as a junior in helping North Mecklenberg High School in Huntersville, N.C. to a 27-2 record and a conference regular season and tournament championship, earning first-team Associated Press All-State honors.
Withers was the 2018 Charlotte Observer 4-A Metro Player of the Year.
“It was a slow transition during the summer because I was trying to get too accustomed to how much I needed to eat and keep my weight up, and how much extra gym time I needed to put in even though my body was hurting during the summer because of the weights and workouts,” Withers told Cardinal Authority. “It’s definitely been a learning experience.”
Louisville opens the season tonight at Miami.
