Kentucky hosted a slew of top-notch recruits for its blowout victory over Louisville, but they also hosted arguably the top transfer prospect in the nation.
This afternoon, Auburn quarterback transfer Joey Gatewood was in attendance to see the 45-13 victory.
According to Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports, Gatewood was there with four-star Kentucky commit John Young, who is recruiting him to Lexington.

Gatewood, the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback and No. 36 overall player in the class of 2018, was on campus a few weeks back for Kentucky’s matchup against Tennessee.
At the time, KSR reported the original visit news, with Matt Jones saying on his radio show that Kentucky had a “very good shot” at landing the former four-star prospect.
“It does look like the transfer thing is out,” Jones said. “It’s Joey Gatewood, the quarterback from Auburn that is transferring because Bo Nix has that job in perpetuity. He is looking at a number of schools, but I’m here to tell you, Kentucky is right there for him. Not just in the mix, and I’m not saying we’re the leader, I’m just telling you this is not just a list of schools and Kentucky is one of them. I’m telling you Kentucky is in. They have a very good shot at getting him. That doesn’t mean they will, and I’m not making a prediction, but I’m telling you it’s serious interest.”
The 6-foot-5, 233-pound redshirt freshman out of Jacksonville, FL appeared in seven contests for the Tigers this season, completing 5 of 7 passing attempts with two touchdowns to go with 29 rushes for 148 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
If Gatewood – who has drawn comparisons to Cam Newton – commits to Kentucky, he would likely have to sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules before taking over as the team’s starter in 2021. Barring an NCAA waiver, the former four-star prospect would have two years of eligibility remaining.
Outside of Gatewood, Kentucky’s visitor list was quite impressive on Saturday, with five-star defensive tackle Justin Rogers being the headliner.
According to KSR’s Nick Roush, here’s who else was in Lexington this afternoon:
Jimmy Calloway — A four-star wide receiver from Georgia, Calloway made headlines when he said he’s ’80 percent’ committed to Tennessee. Recruited by Steve Clinkscale, the 2020 athlete is expected to make a return trip to UK next weekend too.
Jager Burton — The highest-ranked 2021 recruit in the state of Kentucky, Rivals ranks the Frederick Douglass offensive lineman as the No. 132 junior in America. John Schlarman’s been involved with Burton’s recruitment early and often while Ohio State, Clemson, Oregon and others pursue.
Jordan Lovett — The junior defensive back from North Hardin High School has blown up on the recruiting trail over the last month. He was in the stands to watch Kentucky take on Vanderbilt. Today will be his first unofficial visit to Kroger Field. Lovett has offers from UK, UofL, Cincinnati and Tennessee.
Logan Weedman — Another in-state star in the junior class, the three-star 6’5? tight end from Owensboro’s Apollo High School has a scholarship offer from Kentucky.
Tyson Watson — A three-star defensive end from the Great Lakes State, the 2021 prospect holds scholarship offers from both of the Iowa schools and a handful from the MAC.
Jamie Felix — He’s only a sophomore but he’s already a star in the recruiting world. A four-star running back from Kingsland, Ga., 247 ranks Felix as the No. 69 player in the 2022 recruiting class. The top ten running back holds offers from UK, Florida, Florida State, LSU and many more. By the time he’s set to choose a college, he’ll be able to go anywhere in the country.
As reported by Wiltfong, Young was also in attendance, as was four-star defensive tackle prospect Octavious Oxendine.
Not a bad game for Kentucky’s top recruiting targets to attend…
