That’s Baller: Iconic Kurt Cobain Sweater Sold At Auction For $334,000

MTV’s Unplugged gave audiences some of the most amazing acoustic performances by popular musicians. The 1993 performance by Kurt Cobain, the lead singer for the rock group Nirvana, is iconic and bittersweet as it’s one of his last televised performances before committing suicide. Cobain was hailed as the “spokesperson for Generation X”; however, he struggled with a heroin addiction, depression, and the pressure of fame. The group ultimately disbanded after Cobain’s death, although the group remains as one of the bestselling bands of all time, with over 75 million records sold.

The faded green cardigan worn by Cobain in the iconic Unplugged performance, was up for auction and exceeded estimated sales. The sweater is stained with cigarette holes and hasn’t been washed since he last wore it, but sold for $334,000, making it the most expensive sweater sold at auction. The auctions president, Darren Julien, said the sweater was, “the holy grail of any article of clothing that he ever wore.”

In addition to the sweater, other personal belongings of the singer were also for sale. The items included a note from Cobain’s wife at the time Courtney Love, a signed Nirvana record deal contract, and Cobain’s custom-made, left-handed Fender Mustang guitar. The guitar, which was used in Nirvana’s “In Utero” tour, sold for $340,000.
